Defending the Spread with the 4-4 Outside Linebacker

The multiple formation spread offense is vastly becoming the attack of choice in all of football. The read option, inside zone, and outside zone are the staples of this attack. The reads and evolution of the spread have forced defenses to match their current schemes with the reads and responsibilities that the spread offense necessitates. I will focus on the outside linebacker reads vs. the spread offense out of our 4-4 defensive scheme.

I want to begin with the most important aspect of defensive play at ONU, our defensive philosophy. Our philosophy is based on four major principles that direct our athletes’ play during each down.
