Feature Articles:  Six Play Package to Keep Defenses off Balance

With today\'s defenses, trying to keep them guessing and off balance is a full time job. We run the spread shotgun offense and much of our success has come with keeping the defense guessing what is coming by packaging our plays to all look alike. The action is all the same and because of this, it slows down the LB reads and the pursuit of the defense. We run the following plays:

1. Read Option.
2. QB Keep.
3. Bubble.
4. Slant.
5. Screen.
6. Rocket Pass.

READ OPTION
Our base play is the Read Option (See Diagram 1). The QB reads the backside DE to either give to the RB or to keep the ball. We like to pull the OT on this play for a lead blocker.

QB KEEP
The next play in the sequence is the QB Keep of the read play (See Diagram 2). The QB will present a great fake and follow the pulling OT into the hole. As you can see, the backfield action is the same, thus slowing the reads of the LBs.

BUBBLE
The Bubble plays off the same backfield action (See Diagram 3). The QB does not fake the handoff. He gets the ball to the bubble man as quick as he can. With the action of the RB the same as the read and keep play, the read and pursuit of the LBs to the bubble man will be slower.

SLANT
The slant pass is off the bubble action (See Diagram 4). As you can see, the backfield action is the same, forcing the LB to make a read. This slows his pass drop in the area of the slant route. The OLB will read bubble and take 1-2 steps forward before he knows it is a slant pass. The QB reads inside to the outside with the receivers.

UNDER SCREEN
The Under Screen is off the bubble play (See Diagram 5). The bubble man gives a great fake with his hands. The #2 receiver will come off the LOS slow showing his hands as if to be blocking. The receiver will take a 2 count with his head down the LOS, catching the ball outside the OT position. Upon catching the ball, he will run up field.

ROCKET PASS
The last play in the package is the Rocket Pass off the bubble action (See Diagram 6). Again, the action is all the same in the backfield and bubble. The #1 receiver comes off the ball showing his hands as if to block the CB on the bubble pass. After a 2 count, he will rocket up the sideline. The QB will give a shoulder fake to the bubble and then throw the rocket route.
