"Skills And Assignments Checklist" Monitors, Evaluates Player Development
By Jeff Shutter, Quarterbacks Coach
Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa.

AS FOOTBALL COACHES, we all have a great number of skills and assignments that we are responsible to teach to our position players. On offense, the quarterback may have the most skills and assignments to learn. A good coach needs to find ways to determine if each player in his charge is progressing and improving in his skill development.

A simple, yet effective tool a coach may use to ensure that his QB has covered the daily skills necessary to stay sharp and focused on his assignments as required by the weekly game plan is called the “Skills And Assignments Checklist.” By referring to this list and inserting the suitable skills and assignments into the daily practice schedule during individual periods or group periods, all appropriate work for that week can be fit into the timeframe of practices and meetings,CHART: Quarterback Skills And Drills Checklist

This chart can also be used as a valuable evaluation tool as well. A coach can make notes on specific players and the skills that they need work. Each day, the coach can monitor the skill development of his players. These notes can then be used to fill our “year-end player evaluations” or to explain to a player or his parents why his role may be limited and what must be done to earn more playing time.

Each position coach, with input from the appropriate coordinator, should develop a checklist to help make sure all necessary skills are taught and reinforced. This simple teaching tool allows coaches to plan daily schedules and track a player’s skill development throughout the season.
